Match Review

Melbourne won by 19 points, securing the 3 votes for their standout star Petracca. However, Essendon's midfield duo of Shiel and Merrett won the possession battle (25 disposals each vs Melbourne's best of 23) and clearance battle. In the 2020 shortened game format, 25 disposals was a massive total, allowing the losing midfielders to poll the minor votes over Melbourne's role players like Langdon or the low-possession goal-kicker Hunt.
