Pies in Crisis Mode and the Orange Tsunami Rolls On
Footy is a brutal industry. Just two weeks into the season and the reigning premiers are already being written off by half the punditry class. Collingwood sits at 0-2 and the noise is deafening. That is exactly why we are backing them in our AFL Round 2 2024 tips. While St Kilda plays a disciplined brand of footy under Ross Lyon, the Magpies at the MCG with their backs against the wall is a scenario we have seen play out before. Expect McRae's men to bring a level of manic pressure that the Saints cannot handle away from Marvel Stadium.
Speaking of Marvel, Fremantle heads to the fast deck to take on North Melbourne. The Dockers often struggle to score heavily but this matchup is tailor-made for their midfield transition. North's youngsters are talented but they get exposed when the ball moves quickly on the outside. We anticipate a heavy Fremantle victory here which anchors several of our AFL multi bets for the weekend.
One of the most intriguing fixtures sees the Gold Coast Suns travel down to Mars Stadium in Ballarat to face the Western Bulldogs. We talk about home ground advantage constantly but this is entirely atmospheric. The Suns are fundamentally a warm-weather football side. Taking them out of the humidity and dropping them into the swirling winds of a chilly Ballarat afternoon tilts the odds heavily in favour of the Dogs. Bontempelli and Liberatore thrive in the scrap and that is exactly what this game will become.
Up in Sydney, the Swans look like the real deal early in 2024. Their use of the corridor and precision kicking suits the SCG dimensions perfectly. Essendon will try to bring heat around the contest but if the Swans get their kick-mark game going then the Bombers will be chasing shadows all afternoon. We are very confident in the Swans covering the line here.
Finally, we head west where the GWS Giants look set to dismantle the Eagles. It is hard to find value in a head-to-head market paying $1.08 so you have to look at the margins. The Giants have scoring power across every line and West Coast is still plugging holes in a leaky dam wall. This could get ugly late in the fourth quarter.
This round is about identifying where the market has overreacted to Round 1 results and where the genuine class gaps exist. Stick to the data and ignore the noise.
Good luck punters.
