Swans Set to Glide Past Depleted Dockers at SCG Fortress
The Sydney Swans are operating on a frequency that the rest of the competition simply cannot tune into right now. They welcome Fremantle to the SCG this Saturday afternoon in Round 16 and the timing could not be worse for the visitors. While the Dockers have been admirable this season the loss of their skipper and defensive pillar Alex Pearce tilts the scales heavily in favour of the home side. Justin Longmuir’s men are walking into a buzzsaw against a Sydney outfit that has forgotten how to lose.
Here is my breakdown of the match along with the best AFL betting tips for the clash.
Form Guide: Swans Soaring, Dockers Dented
Sydney has been nothing short of imperious. They have won 12 of their last 13 games and sit clear on top of the ladder for a reason. Their ability to score from turnover is elite and their midfield spread is dismantling opposition structures weekly. Remember when these two met earlier this year in Perth? The Swans walked away 48-point winners on Freo’s home deck. Now the challenge moves to the SCG where the Swans look near invincible.
Fremantle is coming off a solid run of form but the injury to Alex Pearce is a catastrophic blow to their structural integrity. Pearce has been in All-Australian form and his absence leaves a gaping hole against a Sydney attack that boasts diverse avenues to goal. The Dockers rely on winning the contest to protect their backline but if Sydney gets outside that phone booth it could get ugly very quickly.
Key Matchups and Tactical Battles
The Midfield Engine Room The battle in the centre square will be fierce but it is on the outside where Sydney wins games. Errol Gulden is in Brownlow-contending form. The young star has racked up 41, 35 and 37 disposals in his last three outings. His running power on the SCG wings will test the aerobic capacity of the Fremantle mids. Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw will accumulate numbers for the Dockers but they need to hurt the Swans on the scoreboard to have any chance.
Freo’s Defence vs Sydney’s Multi-Pronged Attack Without Pearce the heavy lifting falls to Luke Ryan. Ryan is averaging 24.9 touches and takes the kick-ins but he cannot guard everyone. Sydney has Tom Papley at ground level plus Logan McDonald and Joel Amartey in the air. The Dockers' defence looks incredibly vulnerable here. If the ball lives in Sydney’s forward half Luke Ryan might rack up 30 touches just from cleaning up the mess.
Pressure Cooker James Rowbottom is the tackle king of the Swans. He laid 16 tackles against Carlton recently and is averaging nearly 9 a game. Fremantle likes to possess the ball and play a controlled style. Rowbottom and the Swans' pressure forwards will be hunting them down to force turnovers in dangerous areas.
Sydney Swans vs Fremantle Prediction
It is hard to build a case for an upset here. The SCG is a fortress and the Swans are playing with a cohesion that borders on telepathic. The loss of Pearce removes Fremantle's safety net against the tall forwards which means the Dockers have to win the midfield battle convincingly to protect their backline. That is a tall order against Chad Warner, Isaac Heeney and Gulden.
Expect the Swans to absorb Fremantle’s early contest pressure before their superior running power breaks the game open in the second half. The Swans should cover the line comfortably.
Verdict: Sydney Swans by 28 points (104-76).
Same Game Multi Tips
We have put together two plays for this game. One builds the bankroll and the other chases a massive return.
The Safe Play (Odds: 2.65) This purely stats-based same game multi relies on the league's most consistent ball-winners doing what they do every week anchored by a comfortable Swans victory.
- Sydney Swans to Win: They have won 12 of their last 13 and are at home. This is the foundation leg.
- Errol Gulden 25+ Disposals: He is running harder than anyone on the park and hasn't dropped below this mark in months.
- Caleb Serong 25+ Disposals: The heartbeat of the Dockers. He is averaging 31.4 disposals and hasn't dropped below 25 since Round 1.
- Luke Ryan 20+ Disposals: With the ball likely spending plenty of time in Sydney's forward 50 Ryan will be busy intercepting and rebounding.
The Adventurous Play (Odds: 22.50) Here we are banking on Sydney's midfield dominance translating to scoreboard pressure and high possession counts for their prime movers.
- Sydney Swans -21.5: We expect them to cover the handicap against a Pearce-less defence.
- Errol Gulden 30+ Disposals: The wide wings of the SCG suit his game perfectly. He has hit this mark in his last three games with ease.
- Tom Papley 2+ Goals: The small forward loves the big stage and will feast on ground balls inside 50.
- James Rowbottom 8+ Tackles: Freo’s inside game invites heavy tackling. Rowbottom creates the turnovers Sydney scores from.
- Hayden Young 25+ Disposals: Young has transitioned fully into the midfield and is finding plenty of the footy averaging 25.3 in his last three.
Roughy Bets
If you want some value outside the main markets these two props caught my eye.
Errol Gulden 35+ Disposals @ 3.75 Gulden is in absolute overdrive. His recent counts of 41, 35 and 37 suggest the bookies have set this line too low. He is the hottest player in the comp right now and demands the footy.
Brodie Grundy 25+ Disposals @ 4.20 Grundy is playing like an extra midfielder this season. He had 28 and 31 disposals in his last two games. Against his old mate Luke Jackson he will want to make a statement and get around the ground.
