Lions Roar Back to Life: Can the Saints Stop the Gabba Onslaught?
Friday night footy heads north to the Gabba and frankly it looks like the sleeping giant has finally woken up. For the first three months of the season the Brisbane Lions looked like a shadow of their 2023 selves. They were fumbling, slow and lacking confidence. Then Round 13 happened.
Brisbane’s dismantling of the Western Bulldogs was the kind of performance that makes the rest of the competition sit up and take notice. They were slick, aggressive and moved the ball with that trademark lethal speed we know they possess. Now they welcome St Kilda to their fortress and the timing could not be worse for Ross Lyon’s men.
The Saints managed to scrap their way to a win against the Suns last week but it was hardly convincing. Their game plan relies on strangling the opposition and keeping scores low but bringing a defensive grind to a shootout at the Gabba is usually a recipe for disaster. The fast deck in Brisbane favours quick ball movement and high scoring chains. That is everything St Kilda has struggled to produce this year.
Form Lines and The Gabba Factor
When you look at the recent AFL betting tips trends the Gabba remains a nightmare for visiting teams outside the top four. Brisbane’s ball movement is statistically 20% faster at home compared to away venues. That speed kills defensive zones. Last week we saw Eric Hipwood silence the critics with a bag of six goals and Joe Daniher looked menacing. When those two are up and about the Lions are a different beast entirely.
St Kilda on the other hand has an identity crisis in the forward half. They struggle to kick a winning score against top-tier opposition. They simply do not have the firepower to match a Lions outfit that averages 95+ points at home historically. While their defence is honest and disciplined the dam wall eventually breaks when the ball is coming in as fast as Brisbane delivers it.
Key Matchups: The Engine Room
The midfield battle is where this game will be won or lost. Lachie Neale is in Brownlow Medal form. He is coming off a massive 38-touch game and St Kilda often lacks a hard tagger capable of running with him for four quarters. If Neale gets off the chain and links up with Dayne Zorko who is playing a quarterback role off half-back the Saints will be chasing shadows.
For St Kilda the hope lies with Jack Sinclair. He is the only Saint capable of breaking lines with genuine speed. If Brisbane shuts down his run from half-back St Kilda’s transition game dies instantly. Jack Steele will tackle himself into the ground as always but he needs support that just isn't there consistently.
The Verdict
We are tipping the Brisbane Lions to win comfortably. The form reversal against the Dogs was emphatic and they rarely drop games at the Gabba against bottom-10 sides. St Kilda’s grinding style simply won't hold up for 120 minutes against a rejuvenated Brisbane attack on a fast track.
Our Brisbane Lions vs St Kilda prediction sees the home side controlling the tempo and the scoreboard. The Saints might keep it tight for a half but expect the Lions to break it open in the third term.
Prediction: Brisbane Lions by 21 points (96-75)
Same Game Multi Tips
If you are looking to build a multi for Friday night we have split our strategy into a safer builder and a high-value play.
The Safe Play (Odds: $2.76)
We are backing the home ground advantage and the statistical reliability of the two captains in the midfield. These lines are well below their season averages.
- Brisbane Lions to Win: Their form against the Dogs was too good to ignore. They should bank the four points here.
- Lachie Neale 25+ Disposals: The man is a magnet. He averages 29.3 disposals and loves playing at home. 25 is a very safe floor for him.
- Jack Steele 6+ Tackles: Steele is a tackling machine averaging 8.2 per game. In a contested game where his team doesn't have the ball he will be laying plenty of tackles.
- Rowan Marshall 15+ Disposals: Marshall basically operates as an extra midfielder. Even in a loss he finds the footy around the ground with ease.
The Adventurous SGM (Odds: $21.50)
This multi relies on the game script of Brisbane controlling possession and the scoreboard while Sinclair accumulates stats trying to repel attacks.
- Brisbane Lions 1-39: St Kilda’s defensive system usually prevents total blowouts. Expect Brisbane to win comfortably but the Saints to keep the margin respectable.
- Eric Hipwood 2+ Goals: Fresh off a confidence-boosting bag of six. When Hipwood gets his tail up at the Gabba he tends to string good games together.
- Jack Sinclair 25+ Disposals: The architect of the Saints' ball movement. He hit 31, 23 and 30 in his last three outings. They need the ball in his hands.
- Dayne Zorko 20+ Disposals: Averaging 25.8 disposals and rarely drops below 20 this year. He sets up the play beautifully.
- Lachie Neale 30+ Disposals: He is hunting the Brownlow. With 38 and 36 in two of his last three games 30 is a standard Friday night at the office for Neale.
Roughy of the Week
Mason Wood 25+ Disposals ($4.20)
This is massive value for a bloke who has found a rich vein of form. Wood has gathered 21, 22 and 27 disposals in his last three games on the wing. His work rate is elite and he spreads hard from contests which suits the Gabba perfectly. At over $4 this is a great value addition to your slip.
